These two things help to make your subject pop from its surroundings, which is one of the best ways to create more visually interesting photos. While it might not be possible in every instance, I look for natural contrast as much as possible to create great compositions.
Getting this one right in the field is essential because you can't fix it in post-processing! Spend more time scouting your location to find the composition with the most separation and natural contrast.
