BEST Shutter Speed for Waterfall/River Photography
I used to throw on my ND filter to increase my exposure as much as possible when shooting moving water...
This is actually a huge mistake! Opening up your shutter speed too long results in water that is just too smooth. By shortening your shutter speed, you can capture both smooth motion in the water and retain some motion, giving your photo much more visual interest.
If your shutter speed is too fast, you won't capture smooth water; instead, it'll look blurry. There is definitely a sweet spot regarding how long your shutter speed should be for the best-looking water.
For most scenes where you want smooth water that still has some motion, I find a shutter speed between a half-second and two-second range to be ideal. Usually, you can get there with just a circular polarizer if your scene isn't in direct sunlight.
As always, play around with shutter speed to find the one you like best. This is just my personal opinion; you can find the shutter speed you think looks best for your photography!
