Billy Wagner discussing a throwing cue he learned from Burt Hooten.

I do not own these clips and they are for educational purposes.

This is a fantastic cue for working on mechanical efficiency and velocity even when you're not throwing at max effort. I use this cue when warming up and on recovery throwing days in particular. You can still work on improving velocity in these throws by working to be smooth and get the ball to jump as much as possible while staying at whatever intensity you're throwing for the day. For example, warming up I may start at 40% effort but I'll stay there for 10 or 15 throws working on trying to get the most "pop" by being smooth before I allow myself to increase the intensity. This takes focus and practice, but it is well worth it. Adding radar feedback is especially helpful in this case because you can objectively see "hey, I started at 65 mph at 40% effort and 15 throws later I'm at 68 mph with the exact same effort level." Now bump up to 50% intensity and repeat the process. You'll feel way more fluid and in sync if you ramp up like this on a daily basis versus if your first warm-up throw is just muscled at 80% intensity.
