When @sayer.diederich_ signed up with us, he was just finishing up his collegiate career and decided to go ALL-IN on his development for a chance to play professionally, an athlete update from @craigstem 🔥
In his first pen at Tread, he was sitting 86-87 and topped 89. At the time, he said 89 in an indoor pen was actually pretty good for him.
Obviously, we wanted to work on the velocity, but after looking at his pitch metrics it was clear that his pitch shapes needed work. He was primarily a two pitch guy with a flat (dead zone) four seam and a gyro slider that was way too slow.
6 months later, Sayer is leaving with a totally revamped arsenal and a whole new level of confidence.
Fastball: scrapped the four-seam and went with a seam-shifted sinker that sits 90-92 mph and routinely gets sub 10” VB, 20” HB. Much improved from the 88 mph dead zone heaters he was throwing before.
Slider: scrapped the 78-80 mph gyro and went for sweepers. His new sweeper sits 81-83mph and averages 15” HB. A HUGE upgrade to be able to add that much movement without sacrificing (and actually increasing) velocity.
Changeup: he didn’t really have a serviceable changeup before, and now it might be his best pitch. In his last live, he was throwing it consistently 85-86 mph and even got one at 87. Yes, his changeup is now as hard as his fastball used to be.
Velocity: ⬆️
Stuff: ⬆️ ⬆️
Confidence: ⬆️ ⬆️ ⬆️
Super proud of Sayer. Going to miss having him around the facility every day. Can’t wait to see what he does in his first pro season!
