The Albigensian Crusade (1209–1229) was a brutal military campaign initiated by the Catholic Church to eliminate the Cathar heresy in southern France. The Cathars, who followed a dualistic and ascetic form of Christianity, were considered heretical by the Church. Pope Innocent III launched the crusade, calling upon French nobles to suppress the Cathars and reclaim the region for orthodox Christianity. The crusade was marked by extreme violence, including massacres, the burning of heretics, and the destruction of entire towns. The city of Béziers, for example, saw thousands killed, both Cathars and Catholics, when crusaders indiscriminately slaughtered its inhabitants. The conflict devastated the Languedoc region, leading to the decline of its culture and independence. Ultimately, the crusade resulted in the near-total eradication of Catharism and strengthened the power of the French crown and the Catholic Church in the region.
