The Byzantine–Bulgarian Wars (680–1355) were a prolonged series of conflicts between the Byzantine Empire and the Bulgarian Empire, spanning nearly 700 years. The wars began with the rise of the First Bulgarian Empire under Khan Asparuh, who challenged Byzantine control in the Balkans. These early conflicts saw fluctuating fortunes, with periods of intense warfare and temporary peace.
The struggle intensified as both empires sought dominance over the Balkan Peninsula. Key events included the battles of Ongal (680) and Kleidion (1014), where the Byzantines, led by emperors like Basil II, managed significant victories. The establishment of the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 12th century reignited conflicts, with notable clashes such as the Battle of Adrianople (1205) where the Bulgarians won a crucial victory.
By the mid-14th century, as both empires weakened, the wars gradually wound down, culminating in the eventual Ottoman dominance in the region.
