The Sengoku Period (1467–1615) was a time of intense social, political, and military upheaval in Japan, marked by nearly constant conflict among various feudal lords, or daimyos, vying for power. The period began with the Ōnin War (1467–1477), which effectively weakened the central authority of the Ashikaga shogunate, leading to a fragmented political landscape. As centralized control diminished, daimyos consolidated power in their regions, leading to a series of battles and shifting alliances. This era saw the rise of prominent figures such as Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu, who played pivotal roles in unifying Japan. The period ended with the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1615, which ushered in a 250-year period of relative peace and stability known as the Edo Period. The Sengoku Period was a transformative time, shaping Japan's social, political, and cultural landscape.
