The Siege of Constantinople in 1204 was a pivotal event during the Fourth Crusade. Initially aimed at reclaiming Jerusalem, the Crusaders were diverted to Constantinople due to a complex web of political intrigue and financial difficulties. Enrico Dandolo, the Doge of Venice, played a key role in redirecting the Crusaders, who were unable to pay for Venetian transport. Instead, they agreed to help restore the deposed Byzantine emperor, Alexios IV. However, when Alexios IV failed to meet his financial promises, tensions escalated, leading to the sack of Constantinople. The city was brutally looted, and the Byzantine Empire was fractured, marking the establishment of the Latin Empire (1204-1261). The event deepened the rift between the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches and significantly weakened Byzantine power, contributing to its eventual fall in 1453.
