Tests of a super 16mm and super 8mm film emulation look from iPhone 12 Pro Max source video, shot using the Beastgrip DOF Adapter MKII and a 37mm MIR 1B lens. Recorded with FiLMiC Pro in 10-bit LOGv3 with all post production using DaVinci Resolve and the FilmConvert Nitrate plugin. Also includes a film emulation using the free Filmbox Lite plugin.

The Beastgrip Pro DOF Adapter MKII:

Shooting with the Beastgrip DOF Adapter MKII and a vintage lens created an excellent starting point to create a small film gauge look in post production. This allowed a shallower DOF, and a diffusion from the focussing screen inside the adapter. One drawback of the DOF adapter is the uneven focus. The center of the image is sharp, but the edges quickly lose focus, and exhibit chromatic aberration effects. This is not necessarily a big problem for this particular look, but it is a major problem with DOF adapters in general.

FilmConvert vs Filmbox:

FilmConvert has been the primary basis of my film looks and grading. I decided to test Filmbox, which arguably offers the best all in one film emulation tools available, including gate weave and excellent halation. However, I consider the license fee quite high for the Filmbox plugin, and apart from halation, it is not visibly much different to what can be achieved with FilmConvert.

The Overscan Look:

The overscan look in these tests was created by overlaying animated film mattes by Tropic Color. It's really just for fun.
