This lesson covers the development and characteristics of an automatic acceleration tracking feedback control system. Acceleration control is usually found in high performance aircraft. Two scenarios for application are briefly described with skid to turn and bank to turn coordination. The control architecture is introduced and the rationale for is structure is explained. The controller is developed both in the time and frequency domain. Both a physical and mathematical interpretation of the nonminimum phase response, which is characteristic of tail controlled aircraft, is provided. The acceleration controller is explored with linearized transport aircraft dynamics, first using a root locus to explore the effect of proportional and integral gains. Nyquist analysis and step response plots are also interpreted. The acceleration controller is tuned for the short period dynamics, then tested on the coupled linearized short period and phugoid mode system. Finally, acceleration control of the transport aircraft is compared to the missile. These two vastly different systems still show common characteristics, but at different scales.
