This lesson investigates a proportional-integral pitch rate tracking control architecture, it’s tuning, and effect on a transport aircraft. The controller is tuned with a first order actuation model and linearized longitudinal dynamics with short period and phugoid modes. To tune the controller root locus, Nyquist, and step response analysis is performed. The controller is tested in the nonlinear simulation and compared to the linearized model. The effect of actuation performance on achievable controller performance is studied. The importance of pitch damping in combination with adequate actuator performance in achieving the best tracking performance shown.
