"Sonata in GM Op 49-2 no. 20 mvmt 1" Beethoven played on bassetti accordion by Paul Shigrove
This is a very fitting piece for the beginning of another sunny & cheerful summer season. I'm sure the mercurial composer wrote this on one of his good days. It's a RCM grade 8 level piece & is great for the intermediate to advanced level free-bass accordionist. It was published after the composer's death & should have been numbered with a much earlier opus number. This is a “light” sonata with a delicately playful & happy feel. Some critics think that it was composed for pedagogical use for an illustration of sonata form & they may be right. The exposition contains two related themes followed by a very short development section in the relative minor. The 'recapitulation' brings back the expositional themes but Beethoven surprises us by presenting it in the key of CM. The original manuscript has no dynamic markings at all for the 1st mvmt. A great exercise piece for ascending & descending scales. I particularly enjoy the triplet flourishes that serve as playful transitions between sections. The most challenging passages for me were the ascending scale runs which are more difficult for the left hand than descending. This is pretty much the only Beethoven sonata that acceptable translates to the accordion & it was a pleasure to play. ENJOY YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!
