Jay, an eleven-year-old islander, is said to be the descendant of Ficafica, the legendary boy who first discovered the ancient art of kite fishing. Meanwhile, in the Sunderbans of India, young Ramgapal is learning the family tradition of otter fishing, a practice passed down through five generations. Both boys are about to be taught incredible, age-old fishing techniques that define their people and shape their futures.
Jay’s mentor is his 70-year-old uncle Wapo, the tribe’s best kite fisherman. Wapo must teach Jay how to build a kite from forest leaves, craft bait from a spider’s web, and navigate the waters in a pirogue to catch pipefish, just as their ancestors did for centuries. This is more than just a skill; it's Jay’s chance to carry on his island's proud heritage.
Across the globe, Ramgapal is embarking on his first long fishing trip with his father, an otter fisherman. In this unique method, tamed otters help fishermen by driving fish into nets. Ramgapal's father hopes that by learning this traditional craft, his son will carry on the family’s fishing legacy, a tradition tied to their identity for over five generations.
From kite fishing in the Pacific to otter fishing in the Indian waters, these young boys are inheriting extraordinary skills passed down through countless generations. Their journeys are not just about fishing—they’re about preserving cultural heritage and stepping into the roles of their ancestors.
