After Effects CC 2021: Convert to Layered Comp from Merged .psd Photoshop File
This tutorial will show you how to convert a merged Photoshop File to a layered composition in Adobe After Effects CC 2021.
The Problem: You imported a Photoshop File into After Effects as Footage with Merged Layers instead of selecting Composition - Retain Layer Sizes and now you cannot animate the individual layers from your Photoshop .psd file.
The Solution: Create a Layered Comp to reveal all of the Photoshop Layers in your Adobe After Effects Composition.

How To Create A Layered Comp from a Merged Photoshop Layer:
1. Open After Effects Composition
2. Drag Merged Photoshop File (.psd) to Layers Panel
3. Right-click or Ctrl+Click on Photoshop Layer
4. Click on ‘Create’
5. Click on ‘Convert to Layered Comp’
6. Photoshop file (icon) will automatically change to Comp Layer (icon)
7. Double-Click on New Comp Layer to open layered Comp
8. New Comp will open with all of the Photoshop Layers!
How To Edit Original .psd File in Photoshop
1. Right-click or Ctrl+Click on any Photoshop Layer
2. Select ‘Open’
3. Then click on ‘Edit Original’ to open Photoshop
4. Make changes in Photoshop
5. Save in Photoshop and return to After Effects
6. After Effects updates automatically with changes made in Photoshop
