Researchers who study the brain often use animal models like mice to see which brain cells, or neurons, are active during certain situations. However, looking through the entire mouse brain for active neurons is like visiting every single spot in a lake to figure out where the fish are. Stephen Wisser, a postbaccalaureate research fellow in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is helping to refine a quick and easy method for locating all the active neurons in a mouse’s brain, which could help scientists make better-informed decisions about what parts of the brain to focus on in future studies.
