Sugar doesn’t just decorate cookies and cakes; sugar molecules are found on cells as well, including cancer and bacterial cells. Claire Brown, a postbaccalaureate research fellow in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, goes fishing for immune cells that make sticky antibody proteins capable of attaching to different cellular sugar molecules. Finding new sugar-loving antibodies could lead to new ways to diagnose and treat cancer and infectious diseases.
