Five tips on shooting a family portrait for the holidays or on vacation or anytime at all really -

1a. Having a tripod makes this a lot easier since you’ll want to be in the photo and/or if you’re compositing, you’ll want the composition to remain rock steady to make your life easier in post.

1b. If you can swap portraits with someone you know and have them do the focus and triggering etc. There is a lot more you can do compositionally and moment driven that you can’t do by yourself (if you need to be in the pics) but for today’s talk I’m assuming your with just your family and everyone needs to the in the pic.

1. Set focus on an adult who you can place in the frame – make sure you’re using enough DOF and have enough room around your group for cropping and retouching – I often just put the camera into MF to be sure I don’t make any mistakes during the process

2. There are three methods I use from time to time to trigger the camera

a. Self-timer – like to use the C-mode which allows you to set a time, shoot up to 10 frames with a small (.5 second for example) delay between each frame.

b. You can use the Wi-Fi in-camera via trigger mode to allow you to get into the frame and coach everyone. You can also shoot as many frames as you like

c. If you want to do something where let’s say you want to walk a good distance away from the camera (tiny people big landscape) use the time-lapse feature to have the camera shoot 1-20 min+ as you get set and do variations of your idea

3. Because you’re on a tripod always shoot a bunch of frames from behind the camera of everyone but you, making sure you see a good smile from each person so that you can swap heads if needed for an end result everyone is happy with

4. My advice on clothing is pretty simple (assuming you’re planning for this photo which most of the time I’m not)

a. Pick 2-3 colors that you feel compliment on another and have everyone wear those in whatever combination that works for them (think sports teams colors if you need a starting point) If you pick red, don’t insist on any one shade, any variant will do and make the picture more dynamic

b. When in doubt do more dressy/formal – it just tends to look better

c. Tell everyone to consider how much their choices wrinkle and to plan accordingly. I’d rather have people bring clothes to change into that to deal with wrinkled linen for example

5. Finding a good spot

a. The first consideration is light. I tend to do the easy thing and use backlight most of the time and add strobe or reflector as needed, especially for any group larger than 4. If I have just parents and two kids (for example) then I might play around with sidelight etc.

b. You want to vary head heights as much as possible what would be ideal is where 1/3 are standing 1/3 are leaning or sitting on something tall(ish) and 1/3 are seated. I generally don’t want people in the front row facing the camera directly (sometimes this is OK for kids)

c. I like to build from the middle out if you have grandparents etc. I like them to be the middle of the frame. I like to put kids in usual positions like standing in a chair or on a tabletop to vary their heights. Since this is a family pic I like to have everyone physically connected, touching in some small way
