The Rödertor is embedded in the medieval fortifications of Rothenburg o.d. Tauber and forms one of the city gates. From here you can climb the fortified wall. Very well preserved and impressive!

The Rödertor does not open the way directly into the city, but into a courtyard called Zwinger, which ends with another gate. This construction, which is supposed to stop enemies rushing in and create additional fighting/defensive possibilities, found its origin in castle architecture.
The "Röderturm", located behind the gate, is the oldest part of the defense system around the city gate. It is the only tower of the city wall that is freely accessible.
The upper half-timbered structure used to be the dwelling of a "Türmers", which was a post that gave fire alarms, for example.
On the inside, a guard house is preserved on each side of the street.
