The castle gate replaces the former castle
The castle as the nucleus of the town has not been preserved for posterity, but the castle gate with the tower towering over everything and the romantic castle garden have. The hilltop offers a fantastic view over the Tauber valley and the town, which was built right up to the slopes. The reason for the construction of the castle gate was a natural disaster in Rothenburg: in 1356 an earthquake destroyed the castle facilities. From then on, a fortified gate was to protect the town so that attackers would not invade from the west.
As a natural protection to the interior, a moat used to run in front of the gate, and the castle grounds could only be entered via a drawbridge. The bridge's grooves are still visible on the tower. After it became clear that the collapsed castle could not be saved, the citizens received permission from Emperor Charles IV to use the stones for the construction of municipal buildings. The city coat of arms on the archway shows the imperial eagle, generally the sign of free imperial cities that were autonomous and directly subordinate to the king or emperor. The symbol for the fortress reminds us that Rothenburg owes its foundation to the construction of the castle. Nowadays, the castle gate forms the entrance to the castle garden - a small park where, depending on the season, it is beautifully green and blooming. The benches along the footpaths invite you to enjoy the fascinating view of the unique city skyline and the Tauber valley.
