The immune system is supposed to protect us from threats like bacteria and viruses, but in autoimmune diseases, it also attacks our own cells. Adeline Chin, a postbaccalaureate research fellow in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is searching for proteins present at abnormally high or low levels in the blood of kids with a rare autoimmune illness. Her work could help reveal what causes their symptoms and lead to ways for researchers to more easily figure out if new treatments are effective.
