Clostridium Difficile - Quick Bites (Microbiology)
This species may be found as normal intestinal flora in a small population of humans (less than 5%). Antibiotic use can wipe out normal flora in the GI tract, allowing for the overgrowth of C difficile, thereby resulting in disease. C difficile may also be spread from human to human via the fecal-oral route, as the spores can be found in feces. Coming into contact with surfaces contaminated with C difficile–infected feces can spread the infection.
