African elephants (lat. Loxodonta) are a genus of African mammals of the proboscis order. Presumably includes two modern species: the savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana (L. Blumenbach, 1797)) and the forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis (Paul Matschie, 1900)). Recent DNA studies of African elephants suggest that these two species of the genus Loxodonta appeared 1.9 and 6 million years ago. Until recently, they were considered subspecies (Loxodonta africana africana and L. africana cyclotis). These are the largest land animals, their weight can exceed 6 tons.
The Asian elephant, or Indian elephant (lat. Elephas maximus), is a mammal of the order Proboscis, the only modern species of the genus of Asian elephants (Elephas) and one of three modern species of the elephant family. The Asian elephant is the second largest living land animal after the savannah elephant.
