Zebu (lat. Bos taurus indicus) is a subspecies of the species Bos taurus, common in the Indian subcontinent. Unlike the European cow (Bos taurus taurus), the zebu does not originate from the Eurasian subspecies of the aurochs, but is a descendant of the Indian aurochs (Bos primigenius namadicus). Its best habitat is in regions with tropical and subtropical climates. It is more adapted to such a climate, but in terms of qualities important for agriculture, it is less improved by systematic breeding than European cows. The zebu differs from the European cow in the presence of a large hump on the nape, sometimes covered with hair along the edge, and skin folds between the front legs.
