Back in June of this year, Google announced a new update would be rolling out for its Google News application. The focus of the update was to making the Following tab more useful by curating a feed of news articles about topics you were interested in.

The previous update looked like this with your followed topics up at the top, followed by the sources you enjoyed, and then the locations you had favorited were down at the bottom.

So if you were following the Science or Health categories, then you would have to select the Following tab from the bottom and then tap a topic you were following before you would be able to view news articles about said topic.

This is changing with a new update to the Google News application that looks to be another server-side rollout from Google.

I'm seeing this new change on version 5.87 of the application but others are also seeing it when they have version 5.86 installed.

So once Google has rolled out the update to your device, you will see a Following tab that looks like this.

At the top here, you can find a list of the topics you have actively followed on your account.
With the ability to specifically add an interest by tapping on the first button here.

You also have a library option here that, when tapped, takes you to a page that looks like the old Following tab within the app.

But it's unders this row where the new Following tab begins.
And it looks very similar to the For You and Headlines tab that you may be more familiar with.

Google News is taking the topics you're following and creating a personalized feed of news articles about them.
Sadly, we can't change the order in which these topics are being displayed
But if you do come across something you're not interested in anymore, then you can tap the Star icon right here to remove it from the list.

This is something I've been wanting out of Google News for years.
I had previously tried to use the Following tab to keep up with different companies and games that I'm interested in.
But it was always too much effort and the articles that were surfaced were old and things I had already read.

I do hope this new update prevents that from happening in the future.
And this will likely be aided by me actively following more topics within the Google News application.

So let me know if you got this new update with your Google News application down in the comments section below.
I would be curious to learn if any of you actually use the app to keep up with current events.
Or if you use a different application. . .or another website entirely.
