Follow The Port Number
There are many applications that use a range, or worse, random port numbers for its operation.
This becomes ‘difficult’, who are we kidding, its an outright nightmare to analyze and follow.
The first step is to realize or identify which applications have this behavior and don’t assume it’s a ‘audio/video’ thing. Even good old Outlook can use a range of port numbers for its operation.
In this example I chose a RTSP camera stream. The client created a capture filter for TCP 554 and realized that as the video was streaming he only had a few packets. I explained that the video stream doesn’t have to be over RTSP, and probably isn’t. RTSP’s purpose to a video stream is much like SIP is to voice.
In this video I walk you through why I created an ip capture filter, how to locate the port number that will be used for the RTSP video stream and how to decode the base64 authentication encoding used by RTSP.
Enjoy
