The skills learnt in good zoos are invaluable for conserving wildlife in the wild!
In the latest episode of our centenary series, senior bird keeper Natalie discusses her passion for New Zealand’s endemic birds and the conservation work she’s been involved with in her 14+ years at the Zoo – from kākāriki karaka to North Island brown kiwi.
Natalie says, “An important part of our job is talking with the public and inspiring them to learn about the animals and want to care about them, but I believe that it makes your work more authentic if you can share personal experiences with visitors – work that I’ve actually gone into the field and done. I’m hoping that I can make a difference in that person’s life and in their attitudes towards wildlife.”
