Why a controversial Washington law is keeping police from talking to teenage suspects
In 2021, the Washington legislature passed a law that requires law enforcement to connect juvenile suspects to an attorney before questioning them. Advocates for the bill said this would prevent youth from incriminating themselves in situations where they may not understand their rights.
But three years after the law was passed, police in Washington say the application of the law is confusion and is preventing them from questioning youth – even when the youth haven’t committed a crime.
