Evergreen Goodwill, a nonprofit that operates 24 thrift stores from Bellingham to Burien, is closing two of its boutique Seattle stores in part due to an uptick in break-ins, thefts, vandalism, and threats to employees.
The South Lake Union location at 411 Westlake Avenue North and the University District location at 4552 University Way NE are set to close on Sept. 22.
The University District location's storefront is partially boarded up with plywood after recent vandalism. Evergreen Goodwill Senior Vice President of Retail Operations Derieontay Sparks said the windows had already been replaced three times in three months at the University District location, and two times in six months at the SLU location.
The threat to employees, Sparks said, is when people come into the store intent on stealing. The employees work to de-escalate but have a hands-off policy, and then objects have been hurled through windows.
