One of Gil Scott-Heron's many important and catchy tunes, "Angola, Louisiana" concerns the treatment of inmates at the Louisiana State Penitentiary named after a slave plantation which formerly occupied the same plot of land as that prison does today. Angola is the largest maximum security prison in the U.S., with over 6000 inmates, of whom more than 75% are Black. The history of the institution is well worth learning.
"Angola, Louisiana" originally appeared on the 1978 album Secrets, released by Gil Scott-Heron with multi-instrumentalist Brian Jackson.
