Gaining mechanistic insight into age-related obesity can provide clues to developing therapeutic approaches for treating this condition. In this study, Lily Jan and colleagues discover that an increase in mTOR signaling in hypothalamic POMC neurons contributes to age-dependent obesity. Treatment of old mice with the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin enahnces the excitability and neurite projection of POMC neurons, leading to a reduction of food intake and bodyweight.
