How To Insert Special Characters In Google Sheets
In this quick tech how to video, I’m going to show you a trick on how to insert special characters inside of a Google Sheets file.
If you’re familiar with Excel, you know that you can easily add symbols or special characters inside of a spreadsheet by one of two ways. You can either use the wingdings font to add them, or under the insert tab, you can choose symbol. But the issue with Google Sheets is, wingdings is a Microsoft font, and you’re actually pretty limited to the number of fonts you can use inside Sheets, so it’s not available. Secondly, if you choose insert at the top, there’s no special character option.
But there is a trick to get around this by using Google Docs.
First, open a new tab and from the Google page, choose the apps icon and then choose Docs.
Next, create a new blank document. Now inside of here, select Insert from the top menu, and from here choose special characters. You’ll then get a pop up with all the available characters.
You can choose from the first drop down the category, and then from the second drop down a type. Once you find the character you’re looking for, double click it. It will then insert the special character.
Next, highlight the character, and then right click and choose copy.
Head back to your Google Sheet file, place your cursor where you want to insert, and then right click, and choose paste. It will then insert the special character or symbol into the cell.
There is another way to insert special characters, but it’s more limited and you can’t visibly see what you’re choosing, but if you do this enough and use the same character a lot, it may be useful.
Place your cursor in the cell you want to insert into, and on a Windows PC, hold Alt and then press a character on your keyboard. It will then insert an alt character. If you’re on a Mac, then press Option and a character. Like I said, this option is a little more limited and blind, but if there’s a symbol you use often, it could come in handy.
And that’s how you insert special characters or symbols into a Google Sheet file.
