Let's talk about Studying! So often, when I should be studying or revising for an upcoming exam, I just cannot get myself to start. I think this is a problem many students ask: "How do you make yourself study when the last thing you want to do is to study?"
Well, the answer is not to increase your "motivation" or to "just power through". Instead, we need to work on our relationship with studying and how we view a "successful" revision session.
1 → lower the bar. The reason you've clicked on this video is not that you don't know what or how to study. You're here because you want help to start studying to do that, you need to lower the threshold. That means changing your idea about what “studying” means.
2 → Ease yourself in. The automatic thing many of us do, myself included, is to put all of the important, difficult tasks at the top of our to-do list and schedule them first thing on our days. This seems logical, they’re the things we feel we NEED to get done. However, tackling these tasks often requires a lot of time, attention and focus - something many of us are lacking first thing in the morning. Instead, try to build momentum by ticking off several small, seemingly unimportant tasks first.
3 → Make yourself stop regularly, this helps to avoid burning out and ruining your chances of jumping straight back into studying tomorrow. If you always work to exhaustion you’ll just create a negative relationship with studying. The easiest way to do this is with the Pomodoro technique which involves 25 minutes of work followed by 5 minutes off, with longer breaks every 4 rounds or so.
