Thermokarst crater, or as it is also called the Batagayka failure, is located in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Verkhoyansk region. 12 km from the regional center, the village of Batagay. The crater is named after the Batagaika River, the right tributary of the Yana River; it is into this river that melt water flows from the hole.
The land began to sink due to the melting of the permafrost in the 1960s after the surrounding forest was cleared.
The edges of the depression are extremely unstable, which leads to regular landslides due to the melting of the permafrost. The crater is currently increasing in size. The age of the underlying permafrost is estimated at 650 thousand years.
As more and more material at the bottom of the sinkhole melts and becomes looser, more and more surface opens up to air, which, in turn, increases the rate of permafrost melting. It is assumed that the crater could gradually occupy the entire hillside on which it is located before its growth slows down.
Since 2011, researchers from the Research Institute of Applied Ecology of the North of NEFU have been conducting research here.
The rapid expansion of the crater reveals a variety of fossilized materials, including ancient forests, pollen and carcasses of animals such as musk ox, mammoth and horse (5.5 thousand years ago), as well as other animals. In 2009, a well-preserved skeleton of a 4,400-year-old foal and the remains of a baby bison were found here.
It also provides insight into climate data over 200,000 years.
