Microsoft Excel Tutorial - trick for adding total row and total column at the same time using AutoSum.
Welcome to the MrExcel netcast, sponsored by the "MrExcel XL" book. In this episode, we will be discussing a faster way to use AutoSum in Excel. I'm Bill Jelen and I'm excited to share this tip with you.
Before we dive into the tip, we need to create a quick report. We will start from scratch on a blank worksheet and add week numbers across the top. To make this easier, we will use the fill handle with any word followed by a number. Then, we will use the custom list we created in episode 1978 down the left-hand side.
Next, we need to add some numbers to our report. Instead of manually typing them, we will use the RANDBETWEEN function to generate random numbers. This is a great function for creating fake data sets, but I don't recommend using it for real-life budgets. Once we have our numbers, we will use the AutoSum feature to quickly add totals on the right-hand side and at the bottom of our report.
But here's the real trick - instead of using the AutoSum button or Alt+= to add the totals, we can select all of our numbers, plus one extra row and column, and then use the AutoSum feature. This will automatically add the totals all around the report. It's a beautiful trick that will save you time and impress your colleagues.
We will also discuss some formatting tips, such as using the Heading 4 and Title cell styles, and how to create a custom comma style using the dialog launcher. And don't worry, in next week's episode, we will show you how to make this custom style available in all future workbooks.
