Although he's not well known today, Gottfried Heinrich Stolzel (1690-1749) was more famous in his native Germany than J.S. Bach during his lifetime. And this beautifully elegant little composition may explain why. It's part of the Royal Conservatory's Grade 6 piano repertoire list & is of a rounded binary (two-part) structure. That is, it has a A section followed by a B section, which is then "rounded out" with an ending that returns to the A section. It's quite active harmonically to, with a modulation from Gm to Cm in the B section, and Stolzel adds some beautiful color throughout with secondary diminished. It's certainly another piece that one can play for hours & not get tired of.
