The battle for the fortress of Welikije Luki lasted for almost two months. The German operation "Totila" to unblock the encircled garrison was not crowned with success. The 3rd shock army of Galitsky eventually managed to repel all the unblocking blows and storm the city. The Soviet troops managed to divert several divisions of the Wehrmacht and not allow them to be transferred to the Stalingrad direction.
