At the Battle of Gazala, the British 8th Army suffered a heavy defeat. German-Italian troops broke through the defensive line of Gazala, took Tobruk and advanced almost 600 km. German tanks reached El Alamein, the last line of British defense on the way to the Nile Delta and the Suez Canal.
Rommel became a national hero. On June 22, 1942, Hitler promoted Desert Fox to the rank of Field Marshal.
