A more sensible edited version I made of my twelve minute plus remix [ • Slave - Just A Touch Of Love (Cold Du... ].

Back when I first uploaded the full-length version, I figured it would be mostly ignored in the larger scheme of things internet. However, it went microviral (very micro, but still), got some likes and a few comments, all of which was really gratifying.

However, a couple of listeners complained that some of the instruments in the track sounded off-tempo. For a while I just didn't want to think about that possibility, to be honest, and then for an even longer time I couldn't hear anything wrong with my mix (what a surprise!). Then one night I was listening to my remix in the background, not really paying attention until my foot found itself wandering off-beat.

Sigh.

Going back over the remix, I'm pretty sure it's "not my fault!" (to quote a scoundrel and a smuggler). I think that when you start to strip the song down and loop parts over themselves, Slave's loose and funky groove starts to unravel a bit. Instrument parts that are literally just funky ornamentation (when part of an ensemble performance), can't hold the song together on their own if the kick drum is muted, for example. To answer at least one question posed in the comments on the full remix, the performance here was entirely live in the studio before engineers and producers got to reworking it, beginning with the great Jimmy Douglass (who produced "Just A Touch," and the first half of the same LP). I think you can really feel just how loose the groove is in the original if you give a listen to the excellent remixes by either Paul Simpson or the Masters At Work. Each of those mixes tightens the song up considerably, bringing out the disco for sure but--I think--regularizing the funk, and regular is not funky.

Anyway, after realizing how sloppy the groove gets in the full remix, I turned back to the edit I made at the same time, all those years ago. In addition to trimming things down to a much more accessible scale, I think (and hope) this edit also eliminates most of the tempo problems I ran into with the full-length version. This mix doesn't break things down quite as far, though it does revel in that sweet funky rhythm guitar for an intro....
