One of a few mixes I made of this track from Here, My Dear. There's also a dub mix here--    • Marvin Gaye - You Can Leave But It's ...   and an extended edit here--    • Marvin Gaye - You Can Leave But It's ...

Originally released in 1978, royalties generated from sales of the album served as part of the divorce settlement between Marvin Gaye and Anna Gordy. Legend has it that initially Marvin hadn't intended to put much effort into the album, but as he worked on it he was drawn into creating a complex and vivid song cycle chronicling the end of their marriage. The album bombed at the time, and even critics have take a long time to warm up to it. I might be twisted enough myself however to put it alongside What's Goin' On as containing some of Marvin Gaye's most powerful songs.

"You Can Leave But It's Going To Cost You" was never released as a single, but I think it's a truly great song. Marvin Gaye's music is wonderfully rich and complicated stuff. In the multitracks for a song like this, you'll find multiple layers of vocal tracks weaving in and around each other over dense grooves which can suddenly modulate in a jazzy variation or break down to a hard funk. All this makes for a dizzying world of possibilities when it comes to arranging one of his songs and deciding just how, from among the many voice tracks he gives us, he will tell his tale.

This "drama" mix is my attempt to really bring the lyrics to life. Marvin opens the tune reminiscing about a party where he and his wife tried to reconcile prior to their divorce. I've always found his depiction of that moment when he knew nothing could save their marriage a sharply biting bit of agonized soul. Hoping to kick that moment into overdrive, I found a few samples of couples arguing and use them as an intro, then a short while later in the mix repeat that some of the same argument (as couples will when breaking up) while blending it in with sound samples from a small cocktail party. I didn't conceive of it as a twisted reference to "What's Goin' On," but it does serve as one.

Here, My Dear was recorded before recording studio technologies and techniques had developed quite as much as they have today. For example, Marvin and his engineer use a clavinet pumping away underneath the bass to deepen the song's groove. I decided to drop the muddy-sounding clavinet entirely, and instead use a lot of compression and eq on doubled bass and kick tracks, sneaking those sonic monsters in under the original instrument tracks to give the song a more modern, hard-hitting sound. I also added a bit of echo to the kick drum (and a fair bit of reverb to the snare) so that the song shuffles in a funky sort of way.

I think this song is probably my favorite from Here, My Dear, particularly now that I've got a longer, funkier version to brood over. "You Can Leave" is for me a painful epic groove and the inverse of the happy funk of "A Funky Space Reincarnation," the only hit from the album. I hope you like it.
