This Russian folk tune is most appropriate for these "Summer doldrums" we're in right now. It's lazy melody reminds me of Vivaldi's lazy "summer" theme of "The Four Seasons." However, the lyrics speak of the great Volga River as it calmly meanders its way through the mountains & gorges of the Russian landscape. Yuri Kazakov comes up with a most original & captivating set of original variations I've every heard. Abounding with chromaticism, the bass solo presents a majestic sequence of dissonant chords followed by some technically brilliant cascading 9th chords can bring tears of pleasure. Oh, how few artists can make their instruments "vocalize" like this man once did. As a person, Yuri was a humble & unassuming individual who, while we all ordered steak & seafood in an upscale restaurant, would order a bowl of corn flakes instead.
