Lovas and Yuste give a brief description of the history of experiments on the regeneration of the small Cnidarian Hydra vulgaris. Then, using calcium imaging, the authors explore how patterns of activity of the nervous system change as the animal reassembles itself and regenerates after dissociation into individual cells. They observe that small neuronal ensembles form spontaneously and begin interacting at differing rates before synchronizing across the entire animal. Network modeling of the process demonstrates a transient state of hierarchical modularity before the nerve nets arrive at their final distributed structure.
