In this episode of Research in Action, David Markovitz of the University of Michigan discusses his work with an international team aimed at producing an agent that can serve for prophylaxis or treatment of future coronavirus or influenza epidemics. This work revolves around a molecularly modified lectin (sugar-binding protein) from bananas, which was the first example of the ability to separate two functions of a lectin through targeted molecular engineering.
