How To Create Table Of Contents In Google Docs
In this quick tech how to video, I’m going to show you how to add a table of contents inside of Google Docs.
Creating a table of contents is helpful if you have a long and content filled document. This could be a research paper for school or a business document for work.
I’ve set up a super basic file here, with an introduction, three sections, and then a summary. We’ll be creating our table of contents based off this layout.
First, we need to format your sections correctly. Highlight the title of the first section, and then choose Normal Text from the dropdown on the top. Inside of here, choose one of the Headings options.
Go ahead and do this with each section you want in your table of contents.
Once you’re done, scroll to the top, and type Table of Contents.
Next, add a page break by choosing Insert from the top menu, Break, and then Page Break.
Place your cursor underneath the table of contents title and choose Insert again from the top menu. At the bottom, you’ll see table of contents with a couple of layout options. One has page numbers and the other is in color. Choose whichever you like.
You’ll then insert a formatted table of contents, based off the headings you created. You can then format the text if you’d like, by coloring it or changing the font even.
Now to jump to a section from your table of contents, just choose a section, and hit the link that appears.
You can also add to this if you need to. I’ll go down and add a fourth section before my summary. Once you format it as a heading, you then head back to the table of contents, and either hit the refresh icon on the left, or right click and choose Update. Once it’s done updating, you’ll then see your new section.
And that’s how you add, format, and update a table of contents inside of Google Docs.
