Perfecting your camera's settings for night photos can seem challenging, but it can be easy to consider extending the shutter speed to allow more light into the sensor. Unfortunately, this can start to cause your night photos to have star trails. When your shutter speed is too long, you introduce star trails into your images, leading to undesirable images.

Using the rule of 500, you can avoid these streaking stars. The rule states that you divide 500 by your focal length, which tells you the longest shutter speed before experiencing star trailing. For most ultra-wide-angle lenses, you can extend your shutter speed between 20 and 30 seconds, depending on the focal length.

Always respect this rule if you want your stars to look sharp in your astrophotography.
