On the initiative of the banker and national-liberal member of the Reichstag Georg von Siemens, representatives of German trade and industry founded the Society of Trade Contracts in Berlin. The purpose of this association is to support the customs and trade policy of Germany in its present form and to fight against all attempts at change. A diplomatic conference of representatives of Western powers in Beijing, after the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion, approves the final list of demands on China. A meeting of the Goethe League takes place in Berlin. The premiere of the first part of August Strindberg's dramatic trilogy "To Damascus" took place at the Stockholm Royal Dramatic Theatre. It marks the beginning of the expressionist phase in Strindberg's work.
