Meet the Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is a species of mammal in the genus Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus) of the rhinoceros family (Rhinocerotidae). the only surviving member of the genus.

The ancestors of modern rhinos came to Eurasia in the Miocene, i.e. about 25 million years ago. Modern DNA studies show that the Sumatran rhinoceros has not changed much during this time and is a close relative of the extinct woolly rhinoceros.

The Sumatran rhinoceros is the smallest representative of the rhinoceros family, it is much smaller than all other rhinoceroses: its height at the withers is 112-145 cm, body length is 236-318 cm, weight is 800-2000 kg. Sumatran rhinos have 2 horns — the nasal horn reaches 15-25 cm in length, the second horn is underdeveloped. And most of the body is covered with reddish-brown hair. Hair can be either thick (in young individuals), or almost completely absent. In captivity, the hair cover is thicker, which may be due to the fact that in natural conditions it is erased by dense vegetation.
