We start of the day in Kirkwood, California near Lake Tahoe. It’s November of 2020 and the forecast is set for the first snow storm of the season to hit. We had our plans long before the storm. So, we weren’t going to change our plans if we didn’t have to. The snow started the day before. However, it was a light dusting. We set off for Round Top Peak at about 7:30am. We stopped at Caples Lake to check out the snow cover on the mountain. It was so beautiful to see the smoke coming off of the water in the morning. We entered Alpine County and headed over to Woods Lake Campground, which was close to Kit Carson Pass in the El Dorado National Forest. As we got ready, the cold really began to hit us. The temperature was at about 10 degrees Fahrenheit and dropping. I shivered and the cold pierced all the way down to my toes.
We began hiking through the snow at the Woods Lake Campground at 8:32am. My camera batteries were dying instantly from the cold. I wasn’t sure how I would document our trip. Fortunately, I had 3 cameras and a lot of batteries. Getting our bodies moving and hitting the sunlight was a lot better. We entered the Mokelumne Wilderness Area as the snow started to fall more. We know a snow storm was supposed to hit at around 1pm. We were concerned that it was arriving early. We made it to Round Top Lake. Here we organized our gear and decided if we would go to the summit and what to take.
We decided that we would at least try to make it to the Saddle of the Mountain that connects to The Sisters. We headed up the trail with our helmets on and ice axes in hand. The sun immediately appeared and presented us with a possible window to make it to the summit. On the hike up, we saw some of the best alpine views that the wilderness had to offer. We were amazed when we finally made it to the saddle. Our excitement distracted us from the fact that we were making a wrong turn to the backside of the mountain. We climbed up a steep cliff of loose rocks before we noticed our mistake. I finally looked at my GPS app and we went back to to the trail. We were now confident that we were on the right route to Round Top Peak. However, my cameras were dying. My Sony was the last camera remaining and it was experiencing really bad focus problems. However, it was the only camera that I could use. My phone even died soon after. We scrambled up the mountain as the storm raced in behind us.
