If you are getting cancer treatment, you need to take special care in the way you handle and prepare food to avoid food poisoning and other foodborne illnesses. Our 8 tips for food safety during cancer treatment can help protect you.

Some people with cancer have an increased risk of foodborne illness. Here are 8 tips from the National Cancer Institute to keep in mind when preparing food.
1. Wash your hands, knives, and countertops before and after preparing food.
2. Use separate cutting boards and knives for meats and produce.
3. Wash all raw fruits and vegetables before eating them.
4. Thaw meats and fish in the refrigerator or microwave. Do not thaw at room temperature.
5. Don’t consume raw fish or meat or unroasted nuts.
6. Don’t consume unpasteurized juices, eggs, or dairy products.
7. Use a thermometer to cook meat and eggs to safe temperatures. 
8. Don’t eat foods sitting out for more than 2 hours.  Put leftovers in the fridge right away and eat them within 3 days.
