This video is a talk about killing pigs for food and the specifics of the reactions or awareness of the animals. I am actually an animal lover. That's right, I weep when I see abused and mistreated animals. It breaks my heart for instance, to know that so many humans have such little empathy for man's best friend that I see images of chained, beaten emaciated and otherwise tormented animals. However, I also kill animals in a humane fashion for food . I take a pragmatic approach to life.
I am an omnivore not a vegetarian and my kind have been this way for millions of years. This is the best diet for my body type and I have no more interest in choosing between plant and animal than I do choosing between food and drink. I have both. As I said, I am a pragmatic thinker and I find many things in life to be self evident. For instance I have learned to take nothing for granted. I know that all good things come to an end. History teaches us this. I know that civilizations come and go like the glowing and the fading of the northern lights. I know that I have no real way of knowing where I sit in the timeline except to use history as a fairly reliable indicator of things to come.I know that if there were a natural or man-made disaster that caused a collapse of the infrastructure (unimaginable to most) that the first to perish after the first wave of whatever, would be those with more specific needs. A look at the larger picture shows a planet that is ready to rid itself of parasitic overgrowth one way or another. .
A most basic summary of my philosophy would be, "expect the best and be prepared for the worst." I am asked if I am a prepper or a survivalist and the short answer would be "no". I am a man who looks for ways to best provide for myself and family in the here and now as well as in an unpredictable future. I am not a group thinker. I share many beliefs with different groups but I am not a part of a group, other than the human race. I consider most people on earth even atheists to be "religious" about one thing or another. I simply am not wired that way.
I am asked, "why in the world would you want to take on the task of raising livestock for meat when you can just go to the store and buy it and the cost in the end, is much less than feeding and sheltering these large beasts" There are several answers to or reasons for this; for starters I am tired of being dependent on the knowledge and abilities of others for my survival. I have come to a place in my life were I am taking stock of my very existence and the things that I have learned and acquired. Who and what I am, and what things do I really know and understand about the basics of life and which of these things is paramount to my essential being. I am an actor, I am a visual artist, I am a small business owner, I own three or four properties, I have a 7th grade education, etc. The question I ask and that we should all be asking ourselves is, what makes me. Not in the landscape with which you are familiar but instead ask what do my belongings, education, social or political standing etc. mean if I find myself alone with my wife and or child in a field or forest after an invasion or a meteor strike that has wiped out half of the planet's civilization and all of the nice things that I always took for granted. Then which of my possessions, capabilities and bits of knowledge are most critical to my survival. When you break things down this way it comes down to the simple task of acquiring shelter, food and water. Again I look to my understanding of history and my own experiences that teach me "TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED".

I may very well live out my days being able to stroll around in pleasant towns and sit in nice restaurants where one man brings me the food that another man cooked that another man purchased that another man grew. But as I sit and enjoy these convenient blessings, I know that there is or should be a real man within me, close at hand and ready always, should things go South. To be all of these men, I will facilitate, I will grow, I will prepare and I will serve my own.
