If I were to ask you what the best thing to come out World War 2 was and you answered "first person shooters!" I'd reply "wow, terrible answer,. Not even in the ballpark. But yeah that is one cool thing."
Indeed the second world war has had a pretty big influence on fps games. In fact the game that basically spawned the genre was set in the historic conflict (Wolfenstein 3D). But then there was the boom of WW2 games in 2000s that birthed such franchises as Call of Duty and Battlefield. However you can't talk about WW2 first person shooters without mentioning Medal of Honor. Recently Medal of Honor Above and Beyond was released for Oculus VR and it got me thinking back to the original PlayStation classic. So much so that I couldn't help but hop off to the shelf, dust off an original copy and pop it into the PlayStation.
Created by Steven Spielberg, Medal of Honor ps1 sparked the beginning of the WW2 trend back in the retro fps days. It was a unique game putting a heavy focus on historical authenticity mixed with run and gun shooter gameplay. It was a novel game in 1999, but twenty years later does this title still have what it takes to save the world? Find out in this Medal of Honor 1999 review.
Medal of Honor was developed by Dreamworks Interactive and published by Electronic Arts. It is available for the PlayStation 1 and 3 through PSN.
